With a divided vote, the workers of the General Motors Silao plant put an end to a relationship of 15 years with CTM union “Miguel Trujillo López”.

Workers will have the right to form a new union to request certification for the negotiation of the collective bargaining agreement. But the CTM union, presided by Tereso Medina may also try to recover it.

The Department of Labor (STPS) informed that 2 thousand 623 votes in favor of maintaining the collective bargaining agreement were issued, that is 44.6 percent of workers, while 3 thousand 214 of them rejected the collective bargaining agreement, 54.7 percent. And 39 votes were annulled

“Workers will maintain all of the rights and benefits included in the collective bargaining agreement, now by means of individual contracts. The rights of workers to organize freely are maintained, to enable them to decide whether they want a union to represent them in the signature of a new collective bargaining agreement”, said Luisa María Alcalde, Secretary of Labor.

Oscar de la Vega, a lawyer at the De la Vega & Martínez Rojas Firm , said that the result of the voting will be a watershed, but he believes that it will create labor uncertainty, as several unions will want to represent the workers of the plant.
